Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335). More on author: Boulenger.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; benthopelagic; depth range ? - 9 m. Tropical; ? - 25°C (Ref. 13614); 1°N - 3°S
Africa: Lake Victoria.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 13.6 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 4983)
Occurs in inshore regions with a soft mud bottom. Few specimens caught over sand and shingle bottoms (Ref. 4983). The stomach and intestinal contents of specimens which were examined indicate that w/in a size range of 8.4-13.5 cm SL, H. ishmaeli feeds almost exclusively on mollusks, with accidental ingestion of insects (Ref. 558).
