Etymology: abutwebi: Named after Professor Abu Tweb Abu Ahmed for his contributions to the study of hillstream fishes of Bangladesh.

Paracanthocobitis abutwebi is distinguished from all other congeners by the combination of the following characters: complete lateral line; absence of axillary pelvic lobe; alternating large and small dark spots along lateral line; pattern of dark specks on upper side between small dorsal saddles; 4-5 dark bands on cauda fin of adult; usually 11K dorsal-fin rays; and 13 pectoral-fin rays (Ref. 102002).
