Etymology: Alburnus: From the city of Al Bura, where the fish was known (Ref. 45335); amirkabiri: Named for the first Iranian reformer Mirza Taghi Khan Farahani, known as Amir Kabir (1807-10 January 1852), also known as Atabak and Amir-e Nezam.

This species is distinguished from the other species of bleaks and shemayas from Iran by the following set of characters: a poorly expressed fleshy ventral keel which extends up to 2-4 (usually 2) transverse scales rows counted from the anus forwards; lateral line scales 47-59; branched dorsal-fin rays 7½-8½ (usually 8½); branched anal-fin rays 10½-12½ (usually more than 10½); gill rakers 12-17 (usually 15-16); predorsal distance 50.0-54.4% SL; anal-fin base length 9.0-11.7% SL; dorsal-fin depth 16.7-20.9% SL; anal-fin depth 12.0-5.6% SL; body depth at dorsal fin origin 16.9-22.2% SL; caudal peduncle depth 8.7-10.4% SL; head depth 62.2-71.9% HL; eye diameter 27.1-30.8% HL; body with a dark lateral stripe (Ref. 106247).
