Etymology: Cobitis: Greek, kobitis, -idos = a kind of sardine; also related with the voice Greek, kobios, Latin gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); takenoi: Named for Mr. Makoto Takeno, who discovered this spined loach.

Vertebrae: 40 - 44. This species can be diagnosed by the following characters: maxillary barbel short, more of the same eye diameter; adult males with lamina circularis simple and roundish; upper segments of the first branched ray of the pectoral fin narrow; prepelvic myotome 14; line L5 organized in 11-17 oblong or ovoid blotches out of spawning season, and lines L3 and L5 in adult male well-developed longitudinal obvious stripes during spawning season; lower and upper spot at caudal base not connected; tetraploid (Ref. 118115).
Occurs in the middle and lower reaches of rivers with sandy-mud bottom (Ref. 118115).
